Number One Super Guy!

Dear Cartoon Network/DC Comics,

Please let me write and draw an action/comedy Hong Kong Phooey comic book, in the style of 2-D fighting games like Streetfighter and Darkstalkers. I promise to be your BFF. And if we have Capcom make a 2-D fighting game as a tie-in, we will probably make a kajillion dollars.

Sincerest Regards,
J.Ho

Fun Fact: Hong Kong Phooey was voiced by the late, great, Scatman Crothers, who you might also recognize as the voice of Jazz from the original Transformers cartoon. RIP, Scatman.

The second Crimbo

Last night I visited Po and Janna (i.e. my brother and his girlfriend) to celebrate Christmas and swop pressies with them. Instead of a star in their Christmas tree sat an alien. A Christmasy alien, of course!
It was a great, chilled out evening. First a huge, fantastic dinner followed by beer drinking in their livingroom. And as per usual my brother and I posed in front of the camera:

Subway Sketching Postponed until Sunday Jan 4th

Subway sketching has been postponed until Sunday Jan 4th. Everyone is away on vacation and I came down with the chickenpox!!

up north

I am back home after a couple of relaxing days at my dad's.

In Östersund (which really, geographically is situated in the middle of Sweden, but looked upon as the north due to it's climate) the snow was thick and beautiful. The temperature just right and no wind what so ever. Perfect for walking in other words.

On Christmas eve my dad and I took the dogs for a long walk and visited a few of his neighbours to drop of Christmas gifts. The dogs were happy and lead the way.

The rest of the evening was spent in the settee in front of an open fire, with Mimmi (the black dog) lying in my lap. The cat Aaron was lying in my dad's lap and the ginger dog Tussen was on the floor playing with a toy. It was lovely.

But as nice as it was Im glad to be back with my boys again. Kif inside my fleece jumper and Tylor under the blanket on my legs. Home sweet home.

BONUS POST: Johnny Monster Cometh!!!

Well, what have we here... the current issue of Previews... under Image Comics and Shadowline...

Johnny Monster #1 (of 3)
Story by Joshua Williamson
Art and Cover by J.C. Grande
32 pages FC $3.50 February 18

Johnny Monster is the world's foremost super-star monster hunter, but what the world doesn't know is that he was raised by the same monsters he's "hunting"! Now, in order to save his adoptive family...he must fight them! Johnny Monster mixes Tom Strong with Godzilla movies by way of Tarzan and the Phantom to create a compelling and different monster mash! From the acclaimed writer of Dear Dracula and Necessary Evil!
Another offering from my crony Josh, with art by a new collaborator, the talented J.C. Grande! Johnny Monster promises to be a really fun comic, but let's face, what I'm interested in is ME ME ME. Josh asked me to color the covers for Johnny Monster, and it was really the first time I colored someone else's art. It was an interesting experience, and I'm pretty happy with the results. Here are J.C.'s bare inks, alongside the finished cover, with my colors, and a very slick logo by Vinny:

Be sure to ask your local comic shop to order Johnny Monster #1! It's on page 168 of December's Previews catalog, and the Diamond order number is DEC08 2275.

This one is about random thoughts and things I think help to make a successful artist.

Topics for this video is creating your own luck, recognizing the important moments in your life and other topics...

Here's the finished sketch. The painting took an hour and 40 minutes but was sped up to match the audio.

--------------------------------------------------

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone!
I was sent this the other day. I thought it was interesting so I'd like to share it with all of you.

The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary..

My confession :

I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees, Christmas trees... I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees.

It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu . If people want a crèche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her 'How could God let something like this happen?' (regarding Katrina) Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, 'I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?'

In light of recent events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem. We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said OK.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing yet?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.

Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit. If not then just discard it... no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

My Best Regards, Honestly and respectfully,

Ben Stein

Andy Bernard Sketch!

This is Ed Helms as Andy Bernard from the show "The Office".

The other night I received and email from Ed, it was a really cool surprise! This is what he wrote.

"This is Ed Helms. I was alerted to your recent blog posting featuring a very fat-necked version of me. Part of me thinks I should be mad at you, but I'm too busy laughing. The fact is, I am completely enamored with your caricature of me!! It is absolutely hilarious and I'm flattered to be one of your subjects. As narcissistic as it may be, I'd love to get a version to frame in my office. Even just a copy. Is that possible?
Meanwhile have a great holiday!
A new fan -
Ed"

Horrible Post Title #063885: Owl or Nothing

A quick note about the posting schedule for the rest of the year... the second sketch for this week (normally scheduled for Friday) will go up on Wednesday December 24th. Friday, instead, will see a bonus post featuring something that's a tiny bit different from my usual fare.

Next week, however the second sketch will go up a day early, in the wee hours of New Year's Day (Thursday), as has become a tradition here.

I'm sure you're all terribly enthralled by the ins and outs of my post scheduling. Here's today's subject, She-Ra's ally Kowl, in both cartoon and toy forms:

As is my custom, I repurposed the significantly differently-colored toy version into a new character. Corujito, as best as I can figure, means "little owl" in Portuguese, which is how one of the international releases of Kowl was named (using my Sherlock Holmes-like powers of deduction, I'm going to guess it was the Portuguese and/or Brazilian version). I decided to spell it Korujito, just to give the name a bit more of a connection with Kowl. Korujito's gem and title derive from the play feature of the toy, which I guess was some kind of color-changing gem that 'answered your questions' with different colors--I suspect it was a mood ring-like decal, like the old faction sigils on Transformers. But I digress.

* * *

PROFILE: Kowl's young nephew, KORUJITO, is a "chosen one" of their people. He was born with the ability to divine possible futures through the Oracular Gem, an artifact used by seers and oracles throughout the history of Etheria. Korujito is but a child, however he is wise and serene beyond his years.

HISTORY: Korujito is part of an emerging group of young heroes who have become protectors of Etheria while She-Ra is posted in Eternia. The rulers united under the Rebellion consult Korujito's clairvoyant powers when they are faced with grave decisions, and his serene counsel has been invaluable to the stoic and conflicted protector of Etheria, Starburst. Korujito is a frequent companion of the impulsive Princess Sorciela, and Kowl seems to spend an inordinate amount of time keeping the two of them out of trouble.

* * *

Kowl is also posted on the He-Man.org fan-art forums. My post is here, the entire thread (including some of my previous sketches) is here.

And Korujito is also posted here on my variants thread

Merry Christmas!

This year's Christmas card had to include Kif and Tylor, of course!

The background is taken in a forest in Stockholm a couple of years back. The ginger bread house was made togheter with my Dutch friend Thomas a few years back (he's the one who came up with the idea of adding the letterbox next to the front door, ha ha!).

I am spending a couple of days at my dad's in Lapland and the cats are chilling back home with two wonderful cat sitters.

Have a wonderful Christmas all of you. Relax, eat and drink and be merry. I know I'm planning to!

the wonky curtain

I was away on a mini residents' holiday this weekend. The cats were home alone one night. I'm sure they didn't mind at all, but I sure did. Found it very hard to sleep without Kif squashing me and Tylor lying on my legs making sure I couldn't turn...

I got home, did my usual greeting-cuddles with the cats on the hallway floor. Then we all went to rest in the settee under the blanket. Aaahhh, how I love these two boys!

Once in the settee I noticed something strange with the curtains. How come they were all wonky? The cats would never manage to get up to the curtains, so I couldn't blame them. It sure looked odd.

I sat there looking at the curtains and couldn't for the world figure out how that had happened.

Then, about an hour later, my eyes fell upon my Christmas star light in the window. The mystery was solved! The cats can very easily reach the Christmas star. And the wiring to the star is behing the curtain... Jeez, they must have made the star sway quite a bit to get the wiring to mess the curtains up!
Ha ha, I'm glad they entertained themselves whilst I was away!

the heart attack

On the way to work today I noticed a shopping trolley on the pavement. Soon thereafter I noticed a pair of feet sticking out under the trolley!

Once up cloce I saw that it was a very pale looking man lying on the ground. For a split second I thought he was dead, but as I approached him he moved ever so slightly.

"Hello, are you awake? Can you hear me?" I leaned over and asked the man.

He stirred and looked at me, and told me he had a pain in his heart.

" I will get you an ambulance" I said, and as I got my phone out the nurse in me took over: "Is it a sharp, stabbing pain in your chest or is it more of a dull kind of pain?" I asked to see what sort of heart/chest problems we might be dealing with here.

"No ambulance" he said, sounding a lot better all of a sudden. "Don't worry, I will go home".

"So where do you live?" I continued, thinking I couldn't just leave the poor man there but walk him home.

He stood up. Looking pale as before but apart from that perfectly fine. I was confused. He put his arm around me and said " we're from channel 3, doing a documentary. I've been lying here for over an hour. Lots of people have passed me here, but you are the first person to stop and ask me how I'm doing. Thank you."

I couldn't really take it in. Felt a bit foolish to be honest. "Are you SURE you're OK?" I asked. He said he was and so I walked off. Never asked what documentary they were doing. Never asked where the cameras were. Just walked off.

Now, when I've digested the episode, I'm a bit surprised over what he told me. What kind of society do I live in where people don't stop to help someone in need? Scary. It could've been my father lying there. Or yours.

GTA Chinatown Wars Update

The official Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars website was updated with a new artwork. It’s believed that it could be the box art for the game when it will be released. The artwork also reveals a small piece of information. Since the box art for Grand Theft Auto III, every single GTA game (excluding GTA Advance) featured an image of a helicopter in the left top corner. This isn’t a case here. Instead of a helicopter there’s a motorbike, which suggests that there’ll be no aircrafts or helicopters specifically, in Chinatown Wars.

the boys

It is lovely to see Tylor bloom.
.
He is getting better and better at putting himself in the centre of attention and he has started talking quite a bit (he was sooo quiet when he arrived - hardly ever said the slightest little miau...).
.
I have gotten to know his looks so well now - and he has a few for sure!
The "pick me up" look.
The "I am jumping any second so catch me" look.
The "I so fancy to chase the laser tourch - see I'm a hunter!" look and the
"if you don't give me attention right now I will start to scratch on this door"
amongst many.
.
He is adorable and I love him dearly.
He is a bugger to take nice photos of though. Always closes his eyes or turns his back on the camera. But here goes: Tylor relaxed and having a bit of a stretch!
.
Kif and Tylor seem to love the new flat.
.
I live on the top floor. The windows are facing a square where there's always something happening. They keep an eye on the going ons down in the square, they do.
.

Midnight Swim

Hi everyone!
This is my first post since I joined Imaginism Studios. I'm happy to share with you a new piece I collaborated with Bobby Chiu. The little boy is in a mysterious swamp preparing for a midnight swim!

Hope you like it!

Peter

Christmas stress

Im getting a Christmas tree tomorrow.

Today I got a couple of pressies and sent off the ones that I've bought for friends abroad. I only have two presents left to get, and I think I know where to find those too...

I just wish the Christmas spirit would reach me... Glühwine around the fire with friends, wooly socks and jingle bells on the stereo.

Right now all I feel is stressed - will I have time to sort everything out at work for next weekend? Will I have time to see some friends or just work flat out?

Time will tell I guess.

Some very impressive Manhunt inspired fanart was posted by an English illustrator, Dennis Davies. The style he used is very different and original. The Manhunt fanart mini series features the all famous sicko Piggsy, the psychotic convict on death row James Earl Cash and the last but not least, the most memorable characters from the entire game from start to the very end.

The Nobel Prize and Gala

Tonight the grand gala with the Swedish Royal family takes place in the city hall, in honour of the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. The Nobel Prizes were handed out earlier this week, and tonight, at the gala, the prize takers will hold their speaches and then celebrate with their families who are also invited to the gala.

Three years ago I had the privilege to be invited to the Nobel Gala. I was an extremely broke student at the time, and I paniced over what to wear (or, more literally, how to afford anything suitable to wear).

on my way in to the City Hall

I bought an expensive pair of shoes. A girl needs shoes, you know. I asked a hairdressing student for advise what to do with my hair, and then sewed some "diamond beeds" into my home made hair do.

I bought an ugly dress in a tacky, horrid shop for £10 (100.-), took it home and unstitched it all and resewed it with curtain embroidery. Gloves and handbag I had from a previous ball, and I used my winter scarf as a shawl.

The guy who invited me was a neighbour who was some kind of key person at my university at the time.

As for bling bling I bought a "diamond" necklace in yet another tacky shop for £3 (30.-) and matching earrings for even less.

The Nobel Prize winner in physics, dr. Autmann, was amazingly fun on the dance floor - esecially after 12 o'clock when no cameras are allowed any more... He partied and danced with everyone and anyone and was so lovely!

5 o'clock in the morning it was time to go home. I had danced so much my feet were blistered (and that's even though I danced barefooted from midnight!), my hair do fallen out - and talking about falling out I'd fallen out with the guy who invited me around 11 pm... And from 11 pm I had the time of my life!

cross eyed? Me?

A couple of weeks back my glasses broke, and during a visit to the optician they noticed a "hidden squint" in my left eye. So I got sent to an eye specialist.

The eye specialist did lots of strange tests on my eyes, told me off for not wearing glasses ("but they are broken!"), put some horrible eye drops in my eyes to make my muscles/pupils relax and then gave me his verdict:

I have no hidden squint. I suffer from a conditition quite common for women my age. He called it "working yourself to death". Ha ha, my eyes are simply strained.

I am so relieved. Now I've tried out some frames with the help of my brother (who has impeccable taste in matters like this) and will hopefully get my new glasses before Christmas. The frames are pretty funky and out there, so I expect some horrified comments from my Jersey friends just like the last time I bought new specs... :-)

Watch this space!

Mutant Zoo! Gorilla + Octopus!

For the Mutant Zoo jam, held by Dreamwolf and Super-Munkyboy at Deviantart--here's a hybrid between a Gorilla and an Octopus:

... despite their fearsome appearance and deafening displays, the Octorilla is a serene, family-oriented creature, inquisitive and gregarious...
This was the combination that originally attracted me to the Mutant Zoo jam, from a few weeks back. I wasn't in time for the original deadline, but I actually designed this hybrid before I started on the Bat + Deer combination. I finally got a chance to color it up, so here it is.

GTA San Andreas She-Hulk

Artist Davide Cilloni, took a very interesting and unexpected approach to one of the artworks from Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. Davide’s version of a cover girl, who unfortunately didn’t appear in the game, is very clean and creative. The piece, which is called “gotcha” surely catches the eye with its uniqueness. The choice of color scheme was fresh and very imaginative. Davide Cilloni wanted to catch people’s attention with this artwork, and he achieved it very well.

2nd Advent

Today is the second Sunday in Advent.
Two Sundays to go before Christmas.
And so I've lit the second candle today and written all my Christmas cards.
I love this count down!
