terrible train ticket

The other evening I sat down in front of the computer to book train tickets up north, as I was planning to visit my father. I booked a ticket for the 2nd March and emailed the confirmation to my dad to show him the dates.

On Monday evening he phoned me and asked me what I wanted to eat on my arrival, to which I snapped a bit.

“Surely we’ll have time to discuss that closer to the date” I snarled.

“But it is only 2 days away until you arrive?” he said, rather confused.

I checked my email confirmation and sure – I’d booked the ticket for the 2nd February instead of 2nd March. I tried to rebook the tickets, but wasn’t allowed. I tried to get a refund. I wasn’t allowed. I asked customer support if I could sell my tickets on eBay and let the buyer change the name of the ticket. Nope, no, niet, bugger nothing.

On Tuesday morning I reschedualed all my meetings for the week, cancelled appointments and made room for a visit up north a month sooner than I’d originally planned. It was doable, however I had to work my arse off all Tuesday to make it so.

After a long day at work myself and the Mr. went to the pictures to see a preview of “The King’s speech”. Back home late in the evening I treated myself to a glass of wine and chilled.

…When it hit me. The tickets! I needed to print out the tickets from the internet! Bollox. The train was due to leave 7.20 am the following morning and there was no chance I’d manage to print them off anywhere before then.

I phoned customer services who were closed for the day. So I got up at 5.30 am on Tuesday, phoned them and explained my predicament.

“No problem” a very friendly voice said to me. “I’ll change it on the computer so that you can collect the tickets at the train station”. He gave me a booking number and off I went to the station.

Standing by the ticket machine I typed in the booking number several times without receiving anything but a message on the screen saying “no tickets found on this number”. I went to the customer service desk and waited in the queue for a good 15 minutes before I could explain my dilemma for the woman at the desk.

“Ooops”, she said whilst looking at her computer screen. “He must’ve clicked on the wrong button when he tried to help you over the phone this morning. Your ticket is gone”.

With 6 minutes to spare before the train would leave the station I nearly cried. The woman at the desk quickly wrote a few lines on a piece of paper, signed it and gave to me. “Give this to the train host and you’ll be fine”.

So I legged it to the train and made it with a minute to spare befoe departure. The train host accepted my piece of paper. So really I should be happy. But truth be told I’m sick and tired of things not ever going smoothly. And there was no tea on the train either.

bollox

I couldn't find my log in-device for my bank the other week. I kept looking around the flat but it was nowhere to be found. In the end I gave up and phoned the bank to order a new one. They apologized and told me I had to visit a bank office to get a new device, as it was nothing they could send in the post. He asked me how long I'd had my current one, and ensured me there would be no cost in getting a new one at the office.

The following day I entered the bank office. Took a number for the queue and waited my turn. And waited... For a good 30 minutes I waited until it was finally my turn, only to be told I had been waiting in the wrong queue and had to start all over again in another bloody queue.

Needless to say I wasn't overjoyed.

When I finally reached the right desk and explained my problem with the lost log in-device, the clerk told me it was no problem, I could have a new one for 400.- (£40).  I explained I'd been told I could have a new one for free. I also explained I'd had my old one for over 15 years and surely it was time for me to have a new one anyway?

She looked at me, kind of winked and told me if I'd report it to the police as stolen I could have a new one for free. I said it wasn't stolen, and refused to do a fake police report for the sake of getting a free device - something I thought I should get anyway.

The clerk then continued to tell me I could have a second hand one for the price of 250.- (£25) as I was a long time, loyal customer.

The cheek. I was raging. Asked her if she really thought a second hand one for 250.- was a "reward" for being their loyal customer for over 20 years, and then explained that I'd take my services elsewhere, to another bank where I'd get the god damn device for free. (Authors note to you readers: this was not a threat. It was a fact!)

She said nothing for a while. Looked at her computer screen without doing nothing. Then, like a dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde-switch, she turned to me with a big smile and said I could have a new device for free.

What a twat face! What a pile of bollocks! I took my new, free device and left the bank. Not very likely to recommend the bank's services to fellow human beings, am I...?

more courses please

I've done it again. Signed up for a couple of Uni courses this year. One in Leadership and another in Psychology. Great fun, great distraction to life's more boring sides.

Now, fingers crossed I'll be accepted!

The awards – 2010

1) Best day of the year: Midsummers day was a lovely day in every sense. Wonderful company, wonderful weather, great food, great views… Yes, perfect in every sense of the word.

2) Best holiday: There was no special holiday for me this year. Travelled nowhere exciting. However, without doubt Lizzie and Macy’s holiday visiting me was the best! It was truly lovely to have my best friend visiting for over a week.

3) High Point of the year: Meeting the mr.

4) Low point of the year: it’s a close call between work and health.

5) Best read: “Brick Lane” by Monica Ali.

6) Anthem for 2010: “how far you go” by Tim Christensen

7) Regrets: I don’t regret things. Just remember bad moves so that I won’t do them again.

8) Best Night out: a drunken night in the beginning of the summer. It was in a scruffy pub in Stockholm and the company was fantastic. The outcome even better.

9) Worst Night out: all those nights that I had to cancel due to working overtime at work.

10) Best purchase: the kitchen wall paper. The antique living room furniture. And I’ll be so vain I’ll mention those high heel calf high boots with wooden sole too. It was love at first sight.

11) Best relationship: The one that began.

12) Worst relationship: The ones that got infected partly due to the one that began.

13) First show of the year: I went to see the premiere of “den banala kärleken” in Uppsala in January. My sister-in-law invited us as she worked on the production.

14) Last show of the year: was “The Real Groups” Christmas concert in Stockholm in December.

15) Best decision made all year: to study those uni courses besides working. I think I’d gone mad otherwise. And to take that pottery course. It was great fun!

16) Plans for next year: enroll more courses. In pottery. Photography. God knows what. And getting something more challenging to do for a living. And get healthy, of course.

Things I'd like someone to explain

Why does my hair always look its best the same day as I’m due to have it cut?
Why does most pyjamas come in a vest and long trousers? I tend to have my legs under the duvet and my arms on top of the duvet, hence a longsleeved top and shorts would suit me much better!?
Why is it that bog roll sheets are approx. 15x15 cm? Who on earth would use ONE sheet that size to wipe their bum?
Why does my cats only scratch me on the top of my chest 2 seconds before I’m due to go out and have a low cut top on?
Why is everything I like to eat very unhealthy?

just another day

The other day I was due to attend a course at a hospital in the city. Because I wasn't really sure where to go I decided to leave home about 45 minutes earlier than I needed to. Just in case I would get lost on the way. (It has happened...)

I planned to catch the 12.02 train into town. When I got to the station I was informed the train was delayed.
"Good job I'm early" I thought and sat down to wait.

The next train was due at 12.17. This too, I was informed, was late.

At 12.20 I was informed that the trains, in fact, were cancelled due to an electrical fault and buses were ordered to replace the trains. However they did not know when the buses would arrive.

I went to a bus station instead, planning to take a bus to the subway and get to town that way instead. The bus arrived, but due to the cancelled trains lots of people had the same idea as myself, and the queue was endless. I had hence no chance to get on the bus despite doing my best to elbow my way through the masses.

By this point the clock was ticking and I had 30 minutes until the course were to start. There was no way in hell I would make it in time, and I was fuming.

And then a taxi drove past. I waved it down and got in. Explained I was going to the hospital, and had to be there in 20 minutes time. Would we make it? He smiled, said of course and drove off.

The taxi driver turned out to be a lovely man from Kurdistan. He was well impressed with my 5 sentences in Kurdish, and we had a good chat about life in general. He dropped me off right outside the hospital entrance with 5 minutes to spare before the course started.

And the course was brilliant. And they served lovely lunch. And I met lots of nice people. And... And... You get my drift, I'm sure. Everyting worked out just fine.

it's not the end of the world

In the grand scheme of things nothing really matters. It doesn't matter if you overslept. If you forgot to take the rubbish out, someone tells you you're a dimwit or you forget to make that apointment with the dentist. If you've forgotten these things the following things might occur:

1) You oversleep. You miss the bus, hence turn up late for work. People (and perhaps your boss) get annoyed, and so you apologize. You feel a little guilty and embarrassed. End of.

2) You forget to take the bin bags out. You come home from work and your flats smells like rubbish, funnily enough. You get pissed off with yourself, open a window to let some fresh air in and take a walk outside with the bags. End of.

3) Someone tells you you're a dimwit. You get upset. Hurt. You might answer back. Get into a fight. Or pretend you don't care and go home and have a little weep. Tell your mates what an idiot the person is. And in a few days you've forgotten the whole thing and moved on with life. End of.

4) You forget to book a dental apointment. Your tooth starts hurting even more, eventually you end up in the A&E, they send you to the dentist dept, you end up paying shit loads more than you would've have than if you made that phone call in the first place. End of.

Yes, yes, yes... You get my point, I'm sure. And this "nothing really matters"-policy could be applied on most things in life. I read somewhere that "everything will be fine in the end. If it isn't fine, it's not the end". It's true.

So my question is. If it doesn't matter - why do I care so much about it?

turquise towel trouble

I had the weirdest conversation with this shop assistant the other day.

I was looking to buy some new bath towels (well, my towels are nearly 10 years old....), and found these lovely deep turquoise ones. The price ticket on the shelf said 80.-/each, but on a promotion table it said 3 bath towels - 270.-

I walked up to the till and asked the shop assistant which price the towels were. She said "80.- each, but you get three for 270.-". I explained that 270.- divided in three was in fact 90.-, and so it was obviously cheaper to buy one towel three times?

She looked at me as if I was a lunatic. "No", she said firmly, "they're on special offer right now, so you get three for 270.-!" I explained again. I wanted three towels, but I wanted to pay 80.-/each, and therefor would buy one at the time to get the cheaper price.

The woman behind me in the queue started giggling. This made the shop assistant even more rabid, and she started to explain that sometime the shop has certain things on special offer, which indeed these towels were this week, and therefor they were cheaper if I bought three for the price of 270.-. She finished the whole lecture by saying "now do you get it?!"

I couldn't help but carry on arguing with her. I said that No, I most certainly didn't get it, "as 80 x 3 = 240, and that the last time I checked 240.- were cheaper than 270.-. Now, did she get that?!"

And there it was. I actually saw the penny drop in her head. She went bright red, thought for a split second  and said loud and clear for the whole queue to hear "yes, but the towels for 240.- are smaller than the ones for 270.-". And I thought I'd spare her the embarrassment to confront her that there were no different sized ones, in fact. So I said nothing, smiled and paid 240.- for my lovely new towels.

Opposites attracts

I had a revelation yesterday. I was looking at some old photos and saw this guy I met during a trip abroad. I remembered fancying him like crazy. Looking at the photo, 7 years later, I noticed that he in fact was a spitting image of an ex-boyfriend that I dated 15 years ago! Talk about projection!?

Then I had to check out pictures of other loves and crushes. All in all, there have been 2 types of men:
The handsome, sporty surfer-type
The gentle, curly headed hippie

Now how is this? Am I so vain I only go for looks? Surely not as I have known the men for quite some time before falling in love with them and started dating… Of course it matters that in surfy places there are lots of surfers and lots of hippies in general, but why is it that I’ve never been attracted to a blue-eyed Swede, for example?

I can honestly say that I value personality in a person more than anything else – but at the same time: show me a hippie man with an afro and I’ll admit you’ll have me drooling like a teenager. I really wonder why that is. Are we pre-programmed? Is it destiny or fascination? Or is it in fact so that I’m holding on to a dream-version of something that was in the past?

Whatever it is it amazes me. And one day when I’m old I’ll scan all those photos and put them up next to each other and laugh at my own narrow-mindedness when it came to the opposite sex.

positive thinking

Last night I met up with my very good friend Shiler. We went for a couple of beers and loads of girlie talk - we had lots to catch up on as she has been away for a good few months.

We got talking about going through different faces in life, and how somtimes you feel all settled and want to live an averageJoe-life but in the next minute have a crisis and want to travel the world. I guess most people can recognize the feeling. I for one hate it, but then Shiler said something that I will keep in mind next time I start doubting what to do with my life:

I should live in a constant life crises-
I have so much fun whilst being messed up!

Talk about positive thinking! I love it. So thank you Shiler!

to queue or not to queue?

I was back at the doctor's today. I went up to the receptionist to inform her that I had arrived for the appointment. There was noone else in the waitingroom, so I ignored the sign "please take a number and wait for your turn". I informed the receptionist about this as she pressed the little button and shouted "next!".

As soon as I had done so, two women arrived at the reception. They took a queue number, and so one of the women got the number I should've had (had I taken a number), and said on the display.

The woman got very upset and said loud and clearly "well, I don't know what is going on here. My number is on the display but there is a girl standing there already!?"

As it was obvious she said it to let me know she was pissed off at me, I turned around, looked sternly into her eyes and explained that I hadn't taken a queue number as there was in fact no queue when I arrived. She just couldn't let it go and continued "but there is a queue system here. And it clearly states on the sign that we should take a number!" And then she gave me the filthiest look I've seen in a long time.

The cheek! I asked her if she was so anal about everything in her life and if she stood in line for the toilet even if it wasn't occupied, and she looked away pretending not to notice me.

I turned back to the receptionist and said "right, as we were talking about before we got interupted..." She gave me the biggest smile and winked, wished me a very merry Christmas. I guess she gets to put up with shit like that every day and has to put up with it too. Well, I didn't, and I'm glad I put that grumpy cow in place!

I blew a fuse

Yesterday I tried to connect a lamp to my new socket in the ceiling. To do so I had to rewire the lamp, which resulted in me blowing the whole fuse box...

... Great. I phoned my dad who talked me through what to do, and after putting in new fuses things started working again. Strangely, my radio in the kitchen started playing as I added the fuse, even though the radio was turned off.

I went to turn it off. It wouldn't. I unplugged the whole thing and plugged it in again in hope that it would work accordingly. It didn't. I pressed the "on/off" button several times, but the radio kept on playing! Weird.

I gave it a couple of good bangs with my fist and eventually it switched itself off.

Then, at 4 am this morning, I woke up by the radio in the kitchen playing again!!! I couldn't believe it. Either the fuse-blow has made my radio brain damaged or I have a ghost in the flat. A ghost would be nicer, but I guess I've brain damaged the damn thing.

the future is bright

Yesterday, after having lunch with a friend, I had the most grown up meeting ever. I'm proud to say I had booked a meeting with my bank to discuss pension plans and other financial matters!

As I wasn't feeling to great with my cold and my snotty nose (and knowing people look petrified as soon as you sneeze, thinking you might have the swine flu) I was dreading the meeting even more than I would've otherwise, but it was a great meeting.

I learned more about the system of private/states owned and employer pension plans in an hour than I have in 34 years. Now it's not a scary fog. Now I actually get it! And the future doesn't look so bleak, after all. I'll survive on my well earned/saved cash when I retire (if I get to live that long, that is of course. If not I'll make some other needing person happy as I've opted to donate my pension to charity if I pop my clogs myself).

What a step into adulthood. I'm chocked but relieved.

my last pennies

The past month's expenses have really taken its toll on my finances.

After the Gothenburg trip I was left with 2000.- (£150). I have been dying for a new camera for ages now, and when I noticed it was on special offer - HALF PRICE! - I couldn't resist buying it.

And so now I'm left with 6.- in the bank. Very sad. And I never thought of the fact that I needed to buy a memory card for the camera, so now I have a wonderful, new camera that I can't use and an empty bank account.

Pay day is a whole week away. And before pay day I have a friend who's coming to stay with me for a few days. And friends who are coming around for dinner two nights. And I'm off out to ride Island ponies which costs 400.-.

So, what I'm trying to say is that I'm up shit creek. And I don't like it.

fat elastics next

I got a mail order magazine in the post today. It was sent to me from a big mailordering company, but this magazine was a new one for me: "Plus size clothings" it was called. Now, I am fully aware of the fact that I am fat. However, I have not been forced to shop for plus size clothing (yet). Which made me wonder why I got that magazine?

And as I've spent the whole day sleeping and eating sugary e-numbered foods I am now sat here wondering if I've done so because of the magazine or if I got the magazine because of me doing so?

Whatever the case it's depressing...
