Having fun with conte!

Here are more from life drawing class this past week..As I was drawing these, my main objective was to just simply have fun drawing with the conte by using different edges from really soft to hard.
I've just been so uptight with my self lately with work and other projects.I needed to get loose and draw more intuitively--I find that there's more ease and pleasure when you draw without worries :) and still keeping in mind of the fundamental structure of what you're drawing.
But really I think if its practiced more often, those fundamentals will just flow out of you more naturally, because its already embedded in your technique and methods..hope that makes sense.
These are from 1 min to 10 mins...

I've also started getting back into painting with gouaches and will post those soon :)

Kei and I are going to attend the Toronto chapter of the Sketch Crawl on Saturday Oct 25th! We're going to be meeting at the Metro Toronto Zoo for the day! Come on out if you're in the area! There's going to be a whole bunch of us going. We're meeting at 12:15pm Oct 25th.

Here's a few more life drawings of a couple of my favorite models - Shell & Ina.
Some are good, some are not so good but I liked a part of the drawing. Today was an 'open session' which means no instruction today but if a student needed some guidance then I'm there. Otherwise, I'm just doing my own drawing and people could come and watch if they wish.

Life drawings

Here's some recent life drawings I did. My lessons for the class was it's important to be comfortable thinking and expressing what you see in different ways. Practice to think on all sorts of different levels (tones, structure, texture..etc) and you will paint/draw faster and with more ease. So these are some examples of different approaches, concentrating on different things.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the good people at Lines and Colors featured me on their blog.

Also, 'It's art magazine' posted up an interview I did with them. The interview was from a while back but hasn't been posted until now. Check it out HERE

Here's some quick and loose digital paintings from life drawing class this week. 2 more weeks of school at Sheridan college... I'm sure going to miss this class :(

lifedrawings from Bobby's class..

Every so often, I would try to tag along with Bobby to his life drawing classes at Sheridan College for some good ol practice. I love the energy of his classes, from both him and his students-- its a really calming place for me. So here are some from the other day that I'd like to share, of this very petit Hawaiian lady.

These were done in manila paper, 18 x 24 inches, with some conte.

Lifedrawing at Seneca College

Today we went to Seneca College @ York U for lifedrawing. It was so much fun! I've been to lifedrawing pretty frequently recently but mostly just to teach so it was a great change to do some of my own studies. I brought my tablet pc to do some digital painting.
We had a wonderful model named Gay.
Here are some quick studies...

Now for a much deserved update on the 3rd year animation students in my life drawing class!

I'm a strong believer in the idea that everyone has the ability to become great. With hard work and dedication, just about EVERY student has improved noticeably in the past 8 weeks!

My method is to teach them a new way of fundamental thinking and analyzing every week. They practice it until they can do it too. That's it... it's as easy as that to improve. Continue to learn new things in new ways... new ways of thinking. This gives yourself options on how to approach the things you observe. That's just what I think anyways... either way, it working!

Here's just some of the students that have really been stepping it up!

Letti Lo - Beautiful gesture! Great design as well

Lisa Tao - 5 minute pose. Great job Lisa!

Vivian Lai - excellent job!

I don't remember who did this. No name on it either. It's a great drawing though! Inspired by a pose the model did.

This week we started learning about caricatures. Here's a great one from Alex Haddock!

Philadelphia Wizard Con June 15-17

Hi everyone!

Paradise Comicon in Toronto is over now. Thanks to all those that came by our booth.
The few people that were there were very friendly so it made up for the lousy attendance.

This weekend we'll be in Philadelphia for the Wizard Convention at the Pennsylvania Convention Center June 15-17. So if you're in the area, come on by and say hello!

This also means that Subway Sketching will be cancelled this Sunday and will resume the following Sunday.

Art show: Our Imaginism art show will be on June 30th at the Labyrinth in Toronto. We'll be signing books and answering questions as well as displaying tons of original art. Come on down because it's going to be a great event.

I thought I'd end off this post with some lifedrawing scraps. I'm always interested in seeing people's initial sketches so I thought I'd post some of my own. Here's a page of unfinished lifedrawings I did last week.

See you in Philly!

Lifedrawing at TSA

One of the things I love to do and teach is lifedrawing.

Here's a 15min drawing I did last night at TSA in Toronto.

It was done with a Col-erase pencil. Paper is 9x12inches. Then I dropped it into PS to spice it up a bit but the drawing was unaltered.

Here's some more must see blogs that I should have linked long ago.

It's great to see more talented studios in Toronto.

Links and Life Drawing

Here's a little lifedrawing I did yesterday in class on my tablet PC. The great thing about digital lifedrawings are that you can strip away the layers and see all the steps!
